AI Background Remover
The AI Background Remover erases the background behind a subject automatically, using an open-source machine-learning model that runs entirely in your browser. Upload a photo, click Remove, and download a transparent PNG — or drop a solid color behind the cutout. The model (about 42 MB) downloads once on first use and is cached; your image is never uploaded to a server.
Cut out a person, product or object in one click. This remover runs an open-source AI segmentation model directly in your browser — the model (about 42 MB) downloads once on first use and is then cached, and your photo never leaves your device. Export a transparent PNG, or place a solid color behind the subject. For flat or solid-color backgrounds, the color-based Transparent Background tool is faster and needs no download.
How to use the AI Background Remover
- Drop a photo in, or click to choose one from your device.
- Click 'Remove background'. The first run downloads the model (about 42 MB for Fast, 84 MB for High); after that it's instant and offline.
- Touch up any edges using the Refine tools: Erase brush, Restore brush, or Magic Wand for 1-click area clearing.
- Optionally pick a background color, then export a transparent PNG or WebP.
Common use cases
- Make a transparent PNG of a person or product for a store listing or thumbnail.
- Replace a messy photo background with a clean solid color.
- Prepare a cutout subject for a collage, sticker or presentation.
Tips
- Photos of a clear subject (person, product, animal) against a distinct background work best; very fine hair or low contrast is harder.
- Use the Magic Wand tool to click and wipe connected background wedges in one click, or use the Erase brush for precision edge cleanup.
- If the AI clipped a detail like glasses, an ear, or clothing, switch to the Restore brush to paint the original photo pixels right back.
- The model is cached after the first download, so later images process quickly with no network — and nothing is ever uploaded.
Frequently asked questions
Is my photo uploaded to a server? +
No. The AI model runs in your browser (via WebAssembly). Only the model file is downloaded — once, then cached — and your image stays on your device.
Why does the first run take a moment? +
The first time, your browser downloads the segmentation model (about 42 MB for Fast). It's cached afterwards, so subsequent removals start immediately, even offline.
What's the difference between Fast and High quality? +
Fast uses a smaller model (~42 MB) and is quicker; High quality uses a higher-precision model (~84 MB) that can produce cleaner results on some photos. Each is downloaded once and then cached, so you can switch and re-run freely.
What should I do if the AI leaves some background behind? +
Use the built-in Refine Suite: click the Magic Wand to remove a connected leftover patch in one click, or switch to the Erase brush to manually wipe it away. If the AI accidentally trimmed part of your subject, the Restore brush paints the original photo details right back.
When should I use the Transparent Background tool instead? +
If your background is a solid or flat color, the color-based Transparent Background tool is instant and needs no download. Use the AI remover for photos with detailed or varied backgrounds.
